Flexibility with Multiple Group Assignments

Hudu’s permissions system is designed to be both flexible and secure, and one of the most powerful features we offer is multiple group assignments. This allows users to be part of several groups simultaneously, combining permissions from each group for a customized access experience.

How Does It Work?

When a user is assigned to multiple groups, their permissions are cumulative. This means:

  • Permissions from all assigned groups are combined, giving users the broadest access allowed by their group memberships.

  • Restrictions from one group will still apply, ensuring sensitive information remains secure.

This flexibility is especially helpful for:

  • Team Members with Overlapping Roles: For example, a user who is part of the Support Team and a Senior Management group can inherit permissions from both, accessing what’s needed for their job without compromising security.

  • Project-Specific Access: Temporary group assignments can provide access to specific resources without overhauling your permissions structure.

How to Configure Multiple Groups

  1. Go to the Users & Groups settings in Hudu.

  2. Assign a user to multiple groups by selecting the desired groups in their profile.

  3. Test permissions to ensure there are no unintended overlaps or restrictions.

Key Considerations

  • Primary Groups and Their Role: While there’s no "primary group" concept, cumulative permissions make it unnecessary. The permissions from all assigned groups work together seamlessly.

  • Avoid Over-Permissioning: Carefully evaluate group memberships to ensure users don’t gain unnecessary access.

  • Use Cumulative Permissions to Simplify Management: Instead of creating highly specific, single-purpose groups, leverage multiple group assignments to reduce the complexity of your permissions setup.
